Michigan Justice Weaver running as independent

By AP

LANSING, MI –

Michigan Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Weaver says she's running as an independent and won't seek the Republican Party nomination again.

State elections officials got papers Wednesday from Weaver asking to place her name on the November ballot for a third eight-year term.

Weaver says in a statement to the Detroit Free Press, The Grand Rapids Press and the Traverse City Record-Eagle she neither needs nor seeks a party's nomination. She says courts need more independent-minded judges.

The Republicans nominated Weaver in her first two campaigns. She's repeatedly clashed with other court Republicans and often forms a 4-3 voting majority with the court's Democrats.

The other incumbent up this year is Republican Robert Young.
