Gambling, health care ballot plans miss deadline

By AP

LANSING, MI – Several groups that were trying to put proposals on Michigan's November statewide ballot have failed to meet a key deadline.

State election officials say Tuesday that groups aiming to expand casino gambling in Michigan did not turn in the voter signatures needed to make the ballot. A group that sought to allow Michigan to opt out of the federal health care overhaul also failed to submit signatures by the late Monday afternoon deadline.

Each of the groups needed to collect more than 380,000 signatures of Michigan voters to make the ballot.

The group that opposes the federal health care plan passed by Congress earlier this year has scheduled a Tuesday afternoon press conference to discuss its future plans.
