Lansing, MI – Lansing residents are getting better access to public access media. The City of Lansing is building a new media production facility to replace one which closed several years ago.
Lansing's public access channel has had very little public production, since Comcast closed its Lansing studios in 2007. The city is expected to open new studios later this year in the former Holmes Street School.
Dominic Cochran is the director of Lansing's Office of Community media. He says the studios will be open to the public and equipment can be borrowed for remote production.
To help kick-start new programming, the city is offering $250-thousand in grants to groups and individuals willing to produce local shows. The deadline to apply for the grants is next week.
Public access channels are paid for through cable franchise fees. East Lansing and Meridian Township have their own public access channels and production facilities.
