The seven men running to be Michigan's next governor are scrambling for dollars and winning endorsements in the final weeks of the campaign.
On Friday, the five Republicans and two Democrats in the race must report how much they've raised, spent, borrowed and have on hand as of June 30. It's the first glimpse into the candidates'campaign chests since they last reported figures for 2009.
Candidates also are applying for state matching funds. The nonpartisan Michigan Campaign Finance Network reported Thursday that Republican Congressman Pete Hoekstra has raised the most money eligible for matching funds and could gain hundreds of thousands of dollars. All the candidates except Republican Rick Snyder and Democrat Andy Dillon have applied.
Also Thursday, several candidates picked up endorsements. They included former Republican Gov. William Milliken's support for Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder in the GOP race. And Democratic candidate Andy Dillon won an endorsement from Detroit Mayor Dave Bing.
