MARSHALL, MI – Residents will have a chance to get firsthand updates from government officials on an oil spill in a southern Michigan river.
The Environmental Protection Agency and other government agencies have scheduled a 7 p.m. Monday public meeting at Marshall High School. Government officials are expected to give updates on progress in cleaning up last week's massive oil spill in the Kalamazoo River.
The oil flow was stopped and government officials say it's been contained in a 25-mile stretch of the river from Marshall westward past Battle Creek.
Officials with the pipeline-owning company Enbridge Inc. say they detected the leak July 26.
The EPA estimates the spill at more than 1 million gallons of crude while the Canadian company estimates the total at 820,000 gallons.
