Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm says yesterday's primary holds potential for moving Michigan forward.

Democrats chose Lansing's fiery mayor, Virg Bernero, as their candidate for Governor. Republicans chose Rick Snyder, a businessman with no experience as an elected politician. His campaign ads called him "one tough nerd."

Granholm says she'll support fellow Democrat Bernero. But she says both the candidates want to continue to diversify Michigan's economy and invest in education.

"Between the two, I think there's a clear personality choice," she says, "but in terms of the policies, in terms of the economic policies, I think that they are not that far apart."

Granholm also hopes the next Governor and state legislature can avoid partisan deadlock. She says the rigidity of the Republican leadership in the state Senate made it difficult for her to make progress on some of the state's biggest issues, including budgets.
