Enbridge: No cost estimate yet for Mich. oil spill

By AP

MARSHALL, MI –

The company owning a pipeline that spilled oil into a southern Michigan river has hired about 80 contractors to help deal with cleanup and other activities.

Enbridge Inc. has handled about 800 damage claims from residents in the Marshall and Battle Creek areas.

But Enbridge chief executive Patrick Daniel told The Associated Press on Friday the company isn't ready to estimate the total cleanup bill for the Kalamazoo River spill.

Daniel has remained in Michigan since the evening the spill was reported on July 26.

An estimated 820,000 to more than 1 million gallons of oil leaked from the pipeline near Marshall.

The pipeline runs from Griffith, Ind. to Sarnia, Ontario.

It's not known when the pipeline service might restart.
