28 Michigan schools get federal improvement grants

By AP

LANSING, MI –
Twenty-eight of Michigan's lowest-achieving schools have been awarded federal grants aimed at improving student performance.

The grants announced Thursday total about $86 million. More eligible Michigan schools could receive money later this year in a second round of grants.

Schools eligible for the federal improvement grants were identified based on state testing results from 2007-09. Schools must take steps to improve including instructional reform strategies, overhauling its staff or closing and reopening as a charter school.

Six of the schools receiving money in the first round are from the Detroit school system. Five are from Grand Rapids and two are from Saginaw.

Others are located across the state.
