Granholm to cross Mackinac Bridge on the run Mon.

By AP

MACKINAW CITY, MI – Gov. Jennifer Granholm is returning to her tradition of running the Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk and Run as she leads the crossing for her last time as governor.

The Democrat and her husband, Dan Mulhern, will be among 400 runners who will cross the five-mile bridge linking Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas. Tens of thousands of walkers also will participate Monday.

Granholm will give welcoming remarks on the St. Ignace side of the bridge and speak again in Mackinaw City.

She has run across every year since 2003 except in 2009, when she walked with Canadian relatives.

Leading the bridge walk has been a tradition for Michigan governors since 1958, a precedent set by G. Mennen "Soapy" Williams shortly after the bridge opened.
