US officials report progress on Asian carp plans

By AP

WASHINGTON, DC – The Obama administration says a third electric barrier to keep Asian carp from reaching the Great Lakes should be finished next month.

Better fences to keep the carp from slipping past the barrier during floods also are set for completion in October.

Administration officials discussed their strategy Wednesday at a meeting in Washington with a Great Lakes region delegation that included Govs. Jennifer Granholm of Michigan and Ted Strickland of Ohio.

Granholm says the Army Corps of Engineers should quicken its study of severing the artificial connection that lets invasive species migrate between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River basin. Michigan and four other states are suing to separate the two watersheds.
