Lansing mayor and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Virg Bernero has told civic leaders from across the state they need to work more closely to consolidate services.

Bernero told members of the Michigan Municipal League at their annual convention in Dearborn on Thursday that combining services saves money at a time when state taxpayers are hurting.

Many communities already share costs for police and fire protection and some administrative functions. Bernero says voters want to see more of that cooperation.

He also says school districts should look toward consolidation and that "580 districts for 83 counties is unsustainable."

Bernero faces Republican businessman Rick Snyder in the November general election.
