Detroit symphony contract talks planned for Friday

By AP

DETROIT – The Detroit Symphony Orchestra's management and musicians have scheduled a negotiation session to try to reach a contract agreement amid a budget battle.

The meeting with a federal mediator will be Friday morning.

DSO president Anne Parsons and musicians' spokesman Haden McKay have credited mediator Michael Nowakowski with jump-starting talks. The two sides have not met since Aug. 27.

The musicians' union has voted to reject management proposals and authorize a strike to try to avoid steep pay cuts. The orchestra has said it's disappointed that musicians rejected proposals.

McKay says musicians plan to meet Saturday to discuss where things stand.

The season is scheduled to start in October.
