East Lansing, MI – Michigan State University officials broke ground Friday on a new nursing building on the school's East Lansing campus.

MSU is aiming to improve its nursing program and address a ongoing national nursing shortage.

Mary Mundt, the Dean of MSU's College of Nursing, says the new facility will allow the college to place more nursing graduates into teaching roles.

"Every faculty member you put out in another college will be able to educate another 100 students," Mundt said.

Construction on the new facility was spurred by a $7.45 million grant by the National Institutes of Health, as well as donations from the MSU community. The facility is expected to open in 2012.
