LANSING, MI – Governor Granholm says she still has not made up her mind whether to sign or veto a measure that would allow the sale of beer, wine, and liquor on Sunday mornings and Christmas.
The governor says she thinks many of the state's rules for selling alcohol are outdated. But the measure became a lobbyist bonanza in what may have been the Legislature's last meeting before the elections. The governor says too many special favors for adult beverage industry lobbyists may be tucked into the legislation.
"I support opening up these regulations and Sunday sales would be one of the things I support, but it was passed so quickly that there are some technical issues, so if I were to veto it, it would only be so they could go back and correct some of the problems I see with it," Granholm says.
It's not clear if the Legislature is going to meet again before the November elections. The bill would also allow alcohol sales at retirement homes, and beer and wine tastings at grocery stores.
