Marijuana law author: MI law should evolve

By Mark Bashore, WKAR News

LANSING, MI – A key figure in Michigan's medical marijuana law says the measure needs to evolve to include a framework for state regulated distribution. Karen O'Keefe was the lead author of the law that was approved by 63% of state voters in 2008.

"We've actually had six states that have either set up or have enacted laws to allow well regulated state level distribution," O'Keefe says. "And I think that it would be wonderful if Michigan were to follow suit and to also have its law evolve."

Municipal, legal and law enforcement officials criticize the law failing to spell out how marijuana should be distributed. A municipal law specialist from Cooley Law School has come out in favor of federal invalidation of the law. Professor Gerry Fisher advocates that the state legislature then draft a new law.
