EPA gives Sea Grant $1.5 million for Great Lakes

By AP

ANN ARBOR, MI –
The federal government has awarded $1.5 million to the Michigan Sea Grant program for two Great Lakes cleanup projects.

One project will build underwater reefs to improve habitat in the St. Clair River for native fish such as whitefish, walleye and sturgeon.

The other will encourage boaters and marinas to reduce pollution. It will help develop standards for marinas that want to be designated as clean operators.

Michigan Sea Grant involves scientists from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University.

The grant from the Environmental Protection Agency is part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a $5 billion plan to reduce pollution in the lakes and fight invasive species.
