Whether voters pick Virg Bernero or Rick Snyder for governor, the next set of Michigan department heads is likely to be a very diverse group.

Republican Snyder and Democrat Bernero tell The Associated Press they'll appoint cabinet members from both political parties if elected.

Bernero said Wednesday he kept a mix of Republicans and Democrats on board when he became Lansing mayor five years ago and likely would do that as governor.

Snyder says he'll choose his cabinet based more on merit than political affiliation.

Snyder also says if he wins, he won't move into the governor's Lansing residence until his youngest daughter finishes high school. She's now in ninth grade.

Bernero says he hasn't decided yet if he'll move into the residence.
