Gubernatorial candidates Rick Snyder and Virg Bernero agree that Michigan's public school system isn't working as well as it should.
But Bernero, whose wife is a Lansing elementary school principal, and Snyder, whose daughter attends an Ann Arbor private school, differ on how to help school districts improve.
Republican Snyder would like to have more ways to hold schools accountable, offering merit pay as an incentive for good results.
Democrat Bernero wants to focus on truancy and discipline. He says students who are disruptive or absent aren't learning.
The two men agree the Ten Commandments shouldn't be posted in public schools.
Both would restore a popular college scholarship program ended next year, but Snyder said it shouldn't apply to wealthier students.
