Association touts expansion of MI aquaculture

An association of Michigan fish and seafood producers says the state could expand its food production industry by increasing its harvest of edible fish.

The Michigan Aquaculture Association held its annual meeting Tuesday near Traverse City. Russ Allen is an association member who raises shrimp on a facility near Okemos. He says Michigan is well suited to increase its commercial harvest of trout, yellow perch and shrimp.

"You know we can grow shrimp as cheap in Michigan as they can anywhere in the world and we're presently importing 1.3 billion pounds of shrimp a year," he says.

Allen says more financing and state incentives are needed to help expand the $5-million sector.
