LANSING, MI –

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder says his upcoming trade trip to Asia is important for laying the groundwork to boost business investments and exports for the state.

The Republican governor said Wednesday that the trip is about "relationship building" that could pay off later for Michigan's economy.

Snyder is tentatively scheduled to arrive in Tokyo on Sunday. The trip is expected to include stops in Japan, China and South Korea.

Snyder is scheduled to return to Michigan on Oct. 1.

The international trade trip is Snyder's first as governor. The former Gateway computer executive and venture capitalist took office on Jan. 1.

Snyder plans to visit Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai and Seoul while on the trade trip. The trip is expected to include meetings with companies and investors.
