AFL-CIO claims 66,000 in Michigan could lose jobless benefits

LANSING, MI –

The Michigan AFL-CIO is urging Congress to act to prevent an estimated 66,000 Michigan citizens from losing jobless benefits soon.

In a new report, the union says the current average federal benefit to the state's unemployed totals $296 a week. The funding is set to expire unless Congress acts by January 1.

The report also claims young people and people of color would be disproportionately impacted if benefits are not extended.

The union is organizing a demonstration Thursday afternoon at the Lansing office of Congressman Mike Rogers.
