LANSING, MI –

Supporters of Sexton High School are mounting an effort to persuade Lansing Schools' administrators not to close the school.

'Save Our Sexton' is a coalition of teachers, alumni and others who are gathering signatures to present to the Lansing school board on Thursday night.

Spokesman Bill Morris says the process is complicated by the upcoming departure of Superintendent T.C. Wallace.

"The board has a responsibility to the community to actually have the future leader of the district on board before this decision is cast," he says.

Morris also claims academic and other data bolsters Sexton's case over Eastern High. Supporters of that school have launched a similar effort to save their building.

Last month, a community task force recommended closing a high school as enrollment in the district continues to shrink.
