More than 100 young lake sturgeon have been released in a river with the hope that they'll make their way to the Great Lakes and return in 20 years to spawn.
The fish released in the Cass River in Frankenmuth were raised in a hatchery and are only 4 to 6 inches long. Sturgeon can live for decades and grow to more than 300 pounds. The Saginaw News reports that about 200 people watched the release Friday.
Four-year-old Evelyn Wilkinson released some of the fish into the stream. She says it was "cool" but "slimy."
In southwestern Michigan, sturgeon were also released last week in the Kalamazoo River at Fennville. Nearly 200 sturgeon were stocked last year in the Tittabawassee River.
