In doctors’ offices across Michigan, physician’s assistants have become commonplace. They’re supervised by the doctors with whom they work.

Now, legislation at the Michigan state capitol would create a new, similar layer of professional providers in dentists’ offices.

State senator Mike Shirkey (R-Jackson) is the bill’s sponsor.  It’s currently before the Senate health policy committee, which Shirkey chairs.

The Michigan Dental Association opposes the creation of such dental positions, known as dental therapists.

Current State’s Scott Pohl talks with the dental association’s vice president for government relations, Bill Sullivan.
