Mid-Michigan has a long history in the push for equality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) communities. Many cities are holding pride celebrations throughout June.
In 1972, East Lansing became the first city in the United States to ban discrimination in hiring practices based on sexual orientation. That action predated similar ordinances in New York City and San Francisco.
According to Equality Michigan, which advocates for LGBT inclusion in Michigan laws and policies, there are now 42 cities and towns across Michigan that ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. However, there is not a statewide law.
