The Republican-led state House has narrowly approved a bill that would allow more online charter schools in Michigan. The bill passed 56-54 on Thursday and goes back to the Senate where it originated because of changes made in the House version. It raises the cap on the number of cyber charter schools allowed in the state, which is now set at two.

Supporters applaud more educational choices while opponents question the schools' track records and the money spent on charter school operators instead of students.

Michigan's two cyber charters have a combined enrollment of roughly 1,400 students this year. Supporters of expansion say the schools have long waiting lists and parents want more opportunities to enroll.
