Protesters have disrupted a meeting in which a Michigan House committee approved a series of proposed election law changes, including one that would require a voter to present a photo ID or birth certificate when registering to vote. The crowd of about 50 chanted slogans, such as "respect our vote," and some people were escorted from the Tuesday meeting of the House Redistricting and Elections committee. Protesters and voter advocacy groups say the measures create barriers to voting as well as registering to vote.

The bills now go to the full House. Versions of them have passed the Senate.

Republican Committee Chair Pete Lund says "some people like to cause trouble" and they don't understand the legislation. He says the measures won't stop people from legitimately voting.
