Senate Leader: Blue Cross Vote Eyed for Next Week

Senate Majority Randy Richardville says the proposed overhaul of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan could be taken up next week during the chamber's last session until after the election.
The Monroe Republican said Thursday that private meetings and public hearings have been held on the plan to end the nonprofit health insurer's tax-exempt status and align it with competitors. He says it could get a vote Wednesday.

Republican Gov. Rick Snyder proposed and Blue Cross endorsed the legislation. It's challenged by competitors and Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, who seeks a more detailed financial review and expresses concerns about long-term effects on senior coverage.

Blue Cross wouldn't be sold but become a customer-owned nonprofit. The Legislature and Blue Cross' board plan must approve the plan.
