State Attorney General Bill Schuette is filing a terrorism charge against a man suspected of being the “I-96 shooter”.
Schuette’s office says it believes 43-year-old Raulie Casteel fired shots at more than 20 vehicles along the I-96 corridor in October.
The attorney general filed the charge today on Thursday, along with additional felony charges.
Schuette spokesperson Joy Yearout says the terrorism charge is unusual, but it was necessary in this case.
“For several weeks, Raulie Casteel terrorized the people of Michigan from Lansing to Detroit, as they wondered whether they could drive to work, or to school, or even to a Michigan State football game without putting their lives in danger,” she says.
A terrorism conviction would mean life in prison for Casteel.
He is also charged with 60 counts in Oakland County.
One person was injured in the shootings.
