After weeks of negotiations, the state Senate has unveiled its plan to continue funding for state school standards.
As The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher reports, the plan is not much different than one that cleared the state House last month.
Both allow the Michigan Department of Education to spend money to implement the Common Core State Standards – but only under certain conditions. Among other things, the standards could not dictate curriculum to local schools. The Senate added a couple conditions, and clarifies that homeschoolers won’t have to follow Common Core.
Republican state Senator Howard Walker introduced the measure.
“Having these standards in place, I think, will serve our students well and serve our taxpayers well,” he said.
But Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville has not committed to holding a vote on either the House or Senate plan.
