School Officials, Local Governments, And Democrats Say Budget Proposal A Mixed Bag

Governor Rick Snyder’s calls to increase state funding for public education and local governments are being met with mixed reactions from Democrats in Lansing.

As The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher reports, they say it’s too little too late.

Democrats say the proposed spending increases in 2014 would not make up for years of inadequate funding from the state.

Rashida Tlaib is the top Democrat on the state House Appropriations Committee. She says the same goes for the governor’s plan to restore a tax credit for low- and middle-income residents.

“Of course, this is in a positive direction, but this is not new,”  “This is a restoration and it’s not a full restoration.”

Public school officials and local governments are also giving mixed reactions to Governor Snyder’s address. But they admit the funding boosts will help cash-strapped schools and cities.
