Governor Rick Snyder wants a road funding solution on his desk by the end of this week.

As The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher tells us, if that doesn’t happen it will probably have to wait until the fall or later.

Lawmakers will meet three days this week before they’re expected to go on their summer break. One of the governor’s biggest priorities in his first term has been to boost infrastructure spending by more than a billion dollars a year. But with political campaigns about to heat up over the summer, a legislative deal still hasn’t materialized.

Snyder says now is the time for lawmakers to act.

“Let’s not let politics override common sense, and let’s get a solution for our citizens,” he says.

Many legislators on both sides of the aisle say they’re not ready to support a tax increase to pay for roads. Democrats want the governor to promise protections for the poor and the middle class.
