There’s a new office in Michigan dedicated to helping highly skilled immigrants find jobs.
As The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher reports, Detroit is now just the fourth city in the country to host the program.
The national nonprofit group Upwardly Global says immigrants and refugees often have valuable job skills that are in high demand in the US. But the group says they often still have trouble finding work because of cultural differences. The new office is meant to help polish their job searching skills and connect them with local employers.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan cheered Upwardly Global for choosing the city.
“Let’s have a location where we can show these officials – particularly the engineers – that there are lots of opportunities in Detroit,” he says.
The organization also launched an internship program that will connect foreign engineers with companies in Michigan.
