Michigan’s top health official is stepping down after suffering a mild stroke.

We have more from The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher.

Jim Haveman says he’s resigning as director of the Michigan Department of Community Health to focus on his personal health. He said he had hoped to stay in the position through next year – but he says that changed after he suffered a minor stroke in May.

Haveman served two stints as director of MDCH since 1996 and headed the Department of Mental Health from 1991 to 1996. More recently, he played a key role in the passage and implementation of the state’s Medicaid expansion – known as Healthy Michigan.

Governor Rick Snyder praised Haveman for his work leading the health department. Snyder has named MDCH Chief Deputy Director Nick Lyon as the department’s new director.
