Snyder: Detroit EM Should Maintain A Role With City Through Bankruptcy

Governor Rick Snyder says he’d like to see Detroit emergency manager Kevyn Orr stick around even if the mayor and city council vote this week to remove him.

We have more from The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Rick Pluta.

The governor helped select Orr to be Detroit’s emergency manager and, eventually, the architect of the city’s proposed bankruptcy settlement. The governor says he’s watching as Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and the city council negotiate with Orr on his role if and when they vote to remove him as emergency manager.

“And I hope they will come up with an outcome that will just allow us to go faster and faster in terms of getting control back to the city and the at same time, let’s all just grow Detroit,” he says.

The governor says that means keeping Orr around to help until the city exits bankruptcy later this year. State law allows the mayor and city council to remove an emergency manager after 18 months.
