A plan to change the way Michigan awards its electoral votes for president got largely panned at a state House hearing Monday.

We have more from The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher.

The Republican plan would allow the presidential runner-up in Michigan to get up to seven of the state’s 16 electoral votes.

Jocelyn Benson – a Democrat – directs the nonpartisan Michigan Center for Election Law. She admits the current winner-take-all electoral system needs reform.

“But not this reform,” she says.

Democrats say it’s an attempt by Republicans to peel off votes in “blue states” like Michigan. Supporters say it would make Michigan more attractive to presidential candidates of both parties.
