The state Legislature is taking steps to hammer out a road funding compromise.

The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher reports.

The House and Senate passed plans that are drastically different. The Senate voted to double the state’s gas tax to pay for road improvements. The House plan would divert revenues from schools and local governments - and would not raise any taxes.

Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville says they’re in the early stages of talks to find a compromise.

“All we’re doing is setting the table,” he says.

Richardville wants to hold votes on a plan – whatever it ends up being – by Tuesday of next week.
