Governor Rick Snyder addressed the Michigan Civil Rights Commission Monday.

We have more from The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Rick Pluta.

The governor says race relations remain a problem, he wants to make Michigan more attractive to immigrants; and he wants to work more closely with the state’s Indian tribes.

The governor also said he considers improving mental health services a major civil rights issue.

“I think too often we still may be incarcerating people that have a mental health issue when we should be looking at options and alternatives to get them the proper treatment so they can be on a path to success,” he says.

The governor says helping prisoners re-enter society and find employment is a also priority of his second term.
