Some Democrats are hinting a ballot campaign could be in the works to make Michigan a graduated income tax state.

We have more from The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Rick Pluta.

State Representative Jim Townsend says the defeat of Proposal One should send a message that people have lost confidence that the state’s tax system is fair.

“People who are, say, making $30,000 a year pay a lot of more than $30,000 than a wealthy person.”

Michigan is in the minority of states that has a flat rate income tax. 34 have a graduated income tax. It would take an amendment to the state constitution – approved by voters -- for Michigan to join their ranks. Townsend says he’d like to see that on the 2016 ballot.
