Indiana environmentalists are pressing their state's regulators to impose tough conditions on Enbridge Energy's plans to replace 50 miles of oil pipeline near Lake Michigan.
It's part of an upgrade to a system that caused a major oil leak in Michigan.
The new pipeline skirting southern Lake Michigan will run through four northern Indiana counties. It will carry twice the oil volume of the pipeline it replaces, which runs from Griffith, Indiana, through Michigan to Sarnia, Ontario.
In 2010, that pipeline leaked at least 800,000 gallons of fuel into the Kalamazoo Rivers system near Marshall.
The Hoosier Environmental Council says Enbridge has a "dismal safety record" in other states.
Enbridge says the pipeline will have leak-detecting pressure transmitters at every valve and be overseen by environmental inspectors.
