A bill to expand the state’s public sex offender registry is a step closer to becoming law.

It passed the state House Tuesday with overwhelming bi-partisan support.

The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher has more.

The measure would add people who’ve been convicted of crimes that involve minors, such as indecent exposure and possession of child pornography.

It passed unanimously in the state Senate. Only three lawmakers voted against the bill in the House.

Representative Kevin Cotter says people should have any information that will help them protect children.

“These are the types of charges that have a propensity to lead to greater crimes,”  he says.

Opponents of the measure say it would add people to the registry that should not be there. They say that would water down the list and make it less effective in promoting public safety.

The bill now goes back to the state Senate for a final vote.
