A central Michigan city employee says he faced retaliation after reporting a supervisor for making a racist comment.

The Lansing State Journal reports that 59-year-old Jeff Mitchner, a part-time employee with the Grand ledge public service department, says city officials slashed his hours and tried to "bully" him into dropping the claim.

That came after Mitchner, who is black, reported his supervisor for allegedly using a racial slur for African Americans in June.

Mitchner said he hadn't heard that word directed aloud at him in more than three decades.

He added that his supervisor apologized and told him that he "wasn't racist."

Mitchner's hours were restored after filing a union grievance.

Grand Ledge officials declined to comment.
