With temperatures hovering around 90 degrees in Lansing, beating the heat was a goal for many people today.

Lansing officials decided against opening cooling centers, though mayor Virg Bernero’s chief of staff Randy Hannon pointed out that community centers were open during regular hours if needed.

Sparrow Hospital officials report few if any emergency room cases related to the heat.

Still, the potential for trouble is there this week. Lansing Area Safety Council Executive Director Suzy Carter says in extreme heat, the biggest issue is dehydration.

To minimize the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, Carter recommends limiting time outside during the hottest part of the day. She adds that the heat takes its toll especially quickly with children.
