History buffs, break out your pick axes! Michigan Archaeology Day 2015 is coming this Saturday to the Michigan Historical Center in downtown Lansing. Current State’s Kevin Lavery talks with Michigan Historical Center director Sandra Clark about the program.

You may have read this week about the amazing find unearthed in a soybean field in Washtenaw County. A local farmer, Jim Bristle, discovered part of the rib cage of a wooly mammoth. Since then, Bristle has become something of a celebrity, as hundreds of people have flocked to see the prehistoric relics.

It turns out the timing of this find is pretty fortunate for Michigan historians as the discovery of the mammoth bones comes as the Michigan Historical Center presents its annual Michigan Archaeology Day on Saturday. One of the things on the program is a presentation about mammoths and mastodons.
