U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-Michigan) said the military action in Syria was warranted. However, he has no idea of the White House's long-term strategy on Syria.

Michigan lawmakers told WKAR NEWS on Friday at that military strikes were warranted after Syria attacked its own citizens with chemical weapons.

"This is an action that should not be a one off," said U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-Michigan). "We need a comprehensive plan to deal with Syria and the humanitarian crisis that continues to unfold."

"In order to do that, I believe 'safe zones' is something that we have to seriously consider and congress needs to be involved in that decision."

However, Sen. Peters said he is in the dark about the Trump administration's next move.

"I have no idea what the long-term strategy is for the Trump administration and that's a serious problem," said Sen. Peters.

"We know that they change their policies very rapidly. It was just a short period ago, just a few days ago, where the Trump administration seem to imply that it was okay for [Syrian President Bashar] al-Asad to stay in power."

"After they said it was okay for him to stay in power, he then unleashed chemical weapons against civilians, women and children and then Donald Trump changed his opinion."

Both Sen. Peters and Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan) said President Trump must get congressional approval for any new military action in Syria.
