Officials: Deck That Collapsed Built With Improper Materials

Officials say a deck that collapsed in western Michigan, injuring more than a dozen people, was built with the wrong materials for its intended use.

Ottawa County says in a statement that the lumber used for structural beams for the deck at Weaver House in Pine Bend Park in Port Sheldon Township wasn’t suitable for the absorption of chemicals used in the pressure treatment process to make it safe for outdoor use.

At least 14 people were hurt earlier this month during the collapse at the renovated house, which was built in 1902 and is rented out for events. Investigators say some beams were rotten.

Authorities have said about 25 people were on the back deck when it gave way. They were among more than 100 people attending an event.
