A Detroit-based foundation will invest $5 million each in southeastern Michigan and western New York to create interactive public play spaces for children.

The Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation says the Built to Play initiative will provide support to grassroots groups and nonprofits to create and maintain play spaces and skate parks within their neighborhoods.

It is working with the Tony Hawk Foundation which helps build skate parks and the nonprofit KaBOOM! which builds playgrounds.

Funding opportunities include a play space design competition, custom-designed playgrounds and matching and challenge grants to help build public, nonprofit skate parks.

The Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation is named after the founder of the Buffalo Bills. Ralph Wilson was 95 when he died at his Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan, home in 2014.
