Police in Ann Arbor say they're treating the death of a retired chemistry professor as a homicide.

Robert Sharp was found dead Monday in the basement of his house. He was 76 years old and had retired from the University of Michigan in 2008. Neighbors were suspicious when they hadn't seen him at a community meeting.

David Sharp tells the Ann Arbor News that his father loved Ann Arbor and "everything about it." He declined to disclose the manner of death because he doesn't want to harm the investigation. Robert Sharp's wife died of cancer in April.

Associate Dean Douglas Richstone says Sharp's specialty at Michigan was the physical structure of molecules.
