The trade association representing Michigan’s public universities is unveiling a new marketing campaign touting the benefits of a four-year-degree.

On Wednesday, the Michigan Association of State Universities announced the new campaign which will target high school upper classmen and their parents.

The association says Michigan ranks 35th nationwide when it comes to the number of residents who have graduated from a 4-year university.

MASU CEO Daniel Hurley says although there’s a push to fill the state’s skilled trades gap, Michigan can’t forget about the crucial need for a highly educated workforce.

“We need more education and credentials at all levels in the state,” Hurley said. “While yes, there certainly is a strong demand for the skilled trades occupations in Michigan, there is even greater demand for a four-year degree.”

When it comes to college debt, Hurley says most students pay 40 percent less than the degree sticker price due to scholarships and other aid.

The MASU said Michigan needs 171,000 workers with a four-year degree in the next 18 months.
