Emergency crews in Lansing say a suspicious package found near the Capitol building today has been deemed safe.

Police were called to investigate a box and a backpack left near a postal box near the intersection of Allegan and Townsend Streets.  Some nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution.  Lansing Emergency Management Chief Mike Tobin says the Michigan State Police robot opened the package, which was found to contain old clothes and a driver’s license.  Tobin did not say to whom the license belonged.

Evacuees were allowed to return to their buildings shortly before 3 p.m.  The Lansing Police Department is investigating the incident.
